Questions to ask a POS testing vendor

  1. Which POS (point of sale: the till software and hardware that rings up store sales, takes card payments and prints receipts.) platforms have you tested, by product name and version?Oracle Xstore, Jumpmind, NCR and Toshiba behave differently; a named version shows hands-on work.
  2. Which published case shows that work, and is the client named?A named client can be contacted; an anonymised one cannot, which lowers what the case proves.
  3. How many stores or lanes did the largest rollout you tested cover?Store count is the scale figure that matters for a rollout and is often missing from POS cases.
  4. What hardware and peripherals sit in your test lab?Scanners, scales, printers, card terminals and cash drawers cause many POS defects and need physical testing.
  5. How do you test offline mode and store-to-central sync?Stores lose connectivity; transactions captured offline must reconcile when the link returns.
  6. Which payment flows and PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard: the security rules for any business that stores, processes or transmits card data.) scope do you cover?Card-present payments, refunds and voids touch PCI DSS scope that the vendor should describe in writing.
  7. How do you test a rollout in waves across store formats?Pilot stores, regional waves and rollback plans are where POS programs fail if testing stops at the lab.

Questions

What is pos testing?

POS testing checks the point of sale: the till software, the hardware around it and its links to back-office systems. Testers run sales, returns, voids, discounts and tenders, check card terminals, scanners, scales and printers, and test offline mode and later synchronisation. Store rollouts add wave testing across store formats, which is where many POS programs find their defects.
